Svetlana Vorobyova, Deputy Director of the Expert Analytics and International Affairs Department of the Russian Geographical Society, will take part in the first international contest for women's environmental projects "Green Future" with the concept of Geographer’s Day of the BRICS countries.

In 2023, the RGS submitted for consideration by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation a concept note on the establishment of a unified Geographer's Day in the BRICS space, justifying the relevance of this proposal for all countries of the association. With the support of the ministry, the initiative was presented at the level of working groups, the BRICS STI Steering Committee, senior officials and STI ministers.

The first celebration of BRICS Geographer's Day took place on August 18, 2024. It was attended by experts in the field of geography, conservation, tourism, and related fields from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopia.

“It is extremely exciting to work on such a project – the establishment of the first unified professional holiday in the BRICS space, especially when the number of countries of the association has almost doubled in the middle of the way. The fact that the holiday was accepted by an expanded composition gives confidence that we are moving in the same direction, towards the preservation of ecosystems and adaptation to climate change,” said Svetlana Vorobyova.

Following the results of the 16th BRICS Summit, which took place in October in Russia, BRICS Geographer’s Day was included in the Kazan Declaration and the calendar of events to be held in Brazil in 2025.

Svetlana Vorobyova's participation in the first international contest for women's environmental projects "Green Future" will provide additional support for BRICS Geographer's Day and attract more attention to the holiday.

The purpose of the contest is to identify international environmental practices, promote and replicate the best environmental projects in the BRICS countries, as well as create opportunities for the development of international environmental projects in Russia and form a network for international environmental cooperation. The organizers are the Council of the Eurasian Women's Forum under the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the state corporation “Rosatom”.

Applications for participation in the contest are accepted until December 16, 2024. The winners will be announced in the first quarter of 2025.
