At the October 23 plenary session of the XVII Congress of the Russian Geographical Society, its delegates elected Sergei Shoigu President of the RGS for a new term.
The candidate was nominated by the Academic Council of the RGS. According to the Charter of Russia’s oldest public organization, its head is elected for a six-year term. Sergei Shoigu first became President of the Russian Geographical Society in 2009 and has been its continuous head ever since.
Speaking at the geographical forum on Thursday, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the RGS Vladimir Putin recalled that Sergei Kuzhugetovich had been one of the direct initiators of the revival of the RGS back in the day.
«As you know, campaigning is not carried out on election day, but I hope that all participants in the voting will keep in mind his merits in the revival and development of the Russian Geographical Society,» the President of Russia said.
In the subsequent vote, the delegates of the congress unanimously supported this opinion.
