The presentation of the new international expedition of the Tomsk Regional Branch of the RGS «Antarctica: Travelers Unite the World» took place on December 23 at the Headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society in Moscow. The project participants will sail to the shores of the southern continent on January 5, 2026, from the Argentine port of Ushuaia, the southernmost city on our planet.
The expedition will be led by the famous Russian traveler Evgeny Kovalevsky; the captain of the ship, circumnavigator from Argentina Sebastian Juth, the scientific supervisor, the executive director of the Tomsk Regional Branch of the RGS Yulia Kalyuzhnaya. During the voyage, the team will visit the Russian, Argentine, and Spanish Antarctic stations.
The initiative of the Tomsk Regional Branch of the RGS is aimed at drawing attention to the conservation of Antarctica, as well as bringing together scientists and young people from different countries. The main educational goal of the expedition will be to prepare a «Lesson from the Ocean» as part of an educational platform for schoolchildren from all over the world. The upcoming lesson will focus on the Southern Ocean. According to Yulia Kalyuzhnaya, the team will also collect scientific data on Antarctica’s unique biodiversity. It is noteworthy that the tasks for this area were set by the Youth Center of the RGS of the Tomsk Region.
Now the expedition sailing vessel under the command of Sebastian Juth is approaching the starting point of the route. The entire team will gather in the city of Ushuaia immediately before the start. You can follow the expedition on the project’s website.
