Very soon, by the end of December of this year already, the work on the popular-science film «Far Eastern expedition. Where North meets South» will be over. The film will tell is about the unique landscapes, nature, underwater and surface animal world of the coasts and islands of the south of Primorye, and about the history of the region study, about the work of the Far Eastern state marine reserve, about the workdays of themodern scientists - geographers, environmentalists, conservationists.
The film continues the cycle of field research in up-to-date Russia «TheExtreme biology», which was started in 2011. The work is being implemented by the «Production House» Company with the grant support of the Russian Geographical Society.
Peter the Great Bay – is at the same time one of the most eastern territories of Russia, and one of the most southern tips of it. In other words, the very Far East itself. The beauty and majesty symbols of these places are the following: the well-known rock Shtany, rock-kekurs, Gamow lighthouse, picturesque bays and islands. In the waters of the Gulf there is located Far Eastern marine biosphere reserve. The unique ecosystems of the western part of the Japanese sea, including about 200 kinds of fish, more than 700 kinds of the sea marine invertebrates, more than 200 kinds of seaweeds and other plants are located here under the protection of the government.

Even to get to that point of Russia from Moscow with professional video equipment – is some kind of a feat. And «to catch the weather» for the underwater shooting, seizing the moment between typhoons and storms, - is the real luck for the operator. After all, in contradiction to the live inhabitants of the water area, for which the transparence of water is not so important, for the camera this is a key factor. However, spilling tropical storms over land, typhoons are not only «riling» in the Japanese Sea, but are changing the temperature regime of the water as well. And now all the live organisms extremely overreact to that.
The grant of the Russian Geographical Society gave the camera crew of the famous biologist and popular TV presenter Ivan Zatevakhin the opportunity to make a long flight and get to the reserved places. And though the authors of the movie did not manage to avoid the meeting with the real tropical typhoon, persistence and perseverance of the «extreme biologists» brought the fruits.

Anemones and sea squirts
In the education film «Far Eastern expedition. Where North meets South», which is being installed and prepared for release, you will see the giant octopus and seals Larga, the invasion of ocean jellyfish Aureli and underwater naval battle between starfish and their prey.
Shrimp, scallops, sea urchins, fish needlefish, sea cucumbers, soft corals and even the lost ship lying on the bottom, in the cabins of which mackerel and sea bass dwell - it all fell into the lens of the camera crew.
And here the aim of the creators of the film is to explain the viewer, how do the typically cold-water species of marine fauna and the inhabitants of the subtropics coexist alongside. What is it in fact – North or South, and what biological and climatic laws the life follows in this unique biosphere reserve?
