Legacy of the RGS

In 2013, the grand opening of the Headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society took place in Moscow at 10 Novaya Square, building 2. The opening ceremony was attended by President of the Russian Geographical Society, Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, and members of the Board of Trustees of the Society, chaired by Vladimir Putin.

The Moscow Headquarters is located in the building where the tenement house of the Moscow Merchant Society was located in the 19th century.

In the 1920s, it housed a dormitory of the Faculty of Ethnology of Moscow State University, the foundations of which were laid, among other things, by members of the Russian Geographical Society.

The Headquarters in Moscow houses a library, a media studio, a lecture hall, and an exhibition hall. Excursions for schoolchildren are held regularly.
