The Scientific Archive of the Russian Geographical Society is the oldest and only specifically geographical archive in the country. Its formation began at the same time as the foundation of the Russian Geographical Society (1845).
The largest number of manuscript submissions was associated with responses to the Society's programs and questionnaires. These programmes covered a wide range of issues related to the study of the geographical environment, the economy of the regions and the ethnography of the population.
The Scientific Library of the Russian Geographical Society is a unique specialized book collection and is one of the largest geographical libraries in the world.
The library began to form from the first days of the Society's existence. In accordance with the Charter of the Russian Geographical Society of 1849, it was intended for all those engaged in geography, and was supposed to become "one of the important aids in the work of the members of the Geographical Society."
Over the 173 years of the Society's activity, the oldest and only specialized geographical archive in the country, one of the largest geographical libraries in the world and the Cartographic Fund, which has about 40 thousand unique cartographic materials, have been formed.
