Honored Geographers of the Russian Federation
The honorary title "Honored Geographer of the Russian Federation" was established by Decree of the President of Russia on December 6, 2019. The idea of establishing such a title, as well as including Geographer’s Day on the list of significant dates was proposed by Vladimir Putin back in April 2017 at a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Geographical Society.
“This will emphasize the importance of the profession and increase the status of representatives of geographical science. And, most importantly, it will contribute to the popularization of geography itself, to the involvement of even more people in the study of the home country, its nature, and history."
The title "Honored Geographer of the Russian Federation" is awarded to highly professional specialists in the field geography for personal merit: in making geographical discoveries; in carrying out critical scientific expeditions and research; in carrying out work on the creation of geographical catalogs, atlases, popular science publications, reference books; in the preparation and implementation of strategic planning documents; in popularizing the achievements of domestic geographical science; in training of qualified staff in the field of geography.
The title "Honored Geographer of the Russian Federation" is awarded, as a rule, no earlier than 20 years from the beginning of professional activity and in the presence of discipline-specific state awards and awards of the Russian Geographical Society.
