A session of the ecological and educational project «Nature Reserve Management of the RGS» has started in the Magadan Region. Its participants arrived on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk from different regions of the country. They will have to work on the Koni Peninsula, where one of the key environmental protection zones of the region is located.
The volunteers were warmly welcomed by the representatives of the Youth Center of the Russian Geographical Society of the Magadan Region. Aleksandr Nesterovich, Chairman of the regional branch of the RGS, told the guests about the history of Magadan, about the local nature and people, and about the key areas of development of geographical education in the north-east of Russia. The project participants also attended a meeting with scientists from leading Russian universities, organized by the North-East Research Center. The topic of discussion was the study of water resources and permafrost in the Arctic, changes in river flow parameters, methane emissions, and other issues.
The participants of the «Nature Reserve Management of the RGS» project met with Yuri Chekaldin, Director of the Magadan Nature Reserve. At the meeting, they agreed on the main tasks, routes, and forms of interaction during the upcoming field work, which begins on July 31 on the Koni Peninsula.
The volunteers will be engaged in environmental monitoring of the condition of mussels, one of the indicator species of the coastal zone. They will also have to study bear trails, count the amount of microplastics on the coast, and help organize Day of the Russian Geographical Society for residents and guests of the Magadan Region.
