A commemorative plaque in honor of the scientist and geographer Boris Gorodkov appeared in the city of Tarko-Sale in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area. It was installed on the embankment of the Pyakupur River as part of the «Commemorative Plaques of the RGS» campaign.
Boris Nikolaevich Gorodkov was a geographer, geobotanist, soil scientist, researcher of the tundra and Arctic deserts, participant of 26 expeditions across Siberia, the Far East, and the Far North of our country. Based on the materials of his research, the first reliable maps of the Gyda and Taz Peninsulas were compiled.
He is the author of more than 100 scientific papers in which he defined the type of tundra vegetation, for the first time performed geobotanical zoning of the tundra zone, and laid the foundations of tundra studies. Gorodkov’s scientific research was awarded the N. M. Przhevalsky Medal of the Geographical Society of the USSR.
Boris Gorodkov was awarded the Orders of Lenin and the Red Banner of Labor. He was a member of the Academic Council of the Geographical Society of the USSR.

The unveiling ceremony of the nameplate in honor of Boris Gorodkov took place in Tarko-Sale on December 29, 2024, on the M. Sargin Embankment. The event was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the completion of the expedition to study the Pur River basin and the Ob — Pur watershed. It was for these studies that the Geographical Society of the USSR.awarded the scientist the N. M. Przhevalsky Medal.
«We have already installed plaques in the Arctic in honor of prominent figures of the Russian Geographical Society — in remote territories and islands of the Kara Sea. Today we are unveiling the first nameplate in the Purovsky District of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area in honor of the scientist, researcher, and traveler who made a great contribution to the science of our country,» Igor Znamensky, Acting Chairman of the RGS Branch in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area, said at the ceremony.
Pyotr Kolesnikov, Chairman of the Regional Duma, noted that a commemorative plaque in honor of Boris Gorodkov was unveiled at the place where the city of Tarko-Sale began to be built.
«Boris Nikolaevich in his diaries described the confluence of the Pyakupur and the Aivasedapur as a convenient place for the construction of a stationary settlement or trading post, that is, predicted a place for the construction of our city. Thank you to everyone who took part in this necessary and significant event for the region,» said Pyotr Kolesnikov.

The campaign «Commemorative Plaques of the RGS» started in August 2020 in honor of the 175th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society. Its task is to celebrate the contribution of scientists, members of Society, to the development of the country and to tell residents of different regions of Russia about talented fellow countrymen.
