
In the year of the 180th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society, Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded the title of «Honored Geographer of the Russian Federation» to four members of the RGS by his decrees.
Honorary titles were awarded to:
- Dean of the Faculty of Geography of Lomonosov Moscow State University, member of the Academic Council of the RGS Sergei DOBROLYUBOV;
- Director of the Khakassky State Nature Biosphere Reserve, Academic Secretary of the Republic of Khakassia Branch of the RGS Viktor NEPOMNYASHCHY;
- President of the Federal Museum of the World Ocean in Kaliningrad Svetlana SIVKOVA;
- Head of the Biogeography Laboratory at the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Co-Chairman of the Permanent Environmental Protection Commission of the RGS Arkady TISHKOV.
The title of «Honored Geographer of the Russian Federation» was established by decree of the President of Russia on December 6, 2019. Vladimir Putin proposed the idea of establishing such a title in 2017 at a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the RGS. The title is awarded to highly professional specialists in the field of geography for making geographical discoveries, conducting important scientific expeditions and research, creating geographical atlases and popular science publications, popularizing the achievements of Russian geographical science, and training qualified personnel in the field of geosciences. To date, this title has been awarded to 19 scientists, travelers, and public figures.
