In-Person, Remote, Online: Telling About Geographical Dictation – 2021 Formats In-Person, Remote, Online: Telling About Geographical Dictation – 2021 Formats

The seventh Geographical Dictation of the Russian Geographical Society will take place on November 14, 2021. The event will be held in three formats – in-person, remote, and online. On the eve of the Dictation, we will tell you about how they differ from each other, so that each participant can choose their own.

At all venues – in-person and remote – the Geographical Dictation starts on November 14, 2021, at 12:00 local time of the venue. To take part in the event, you must register at the nearest convenient event venue. To do this, go to the "Geography of the Dictation" section ("География диктанта") on the website dictant.rgo.ru, select a venue and click on the "Details" button. The venue’s page contains the conditions for participation, contacts of the organizers, the procedure and methods of registration, information on the number of seats and access for persons with disabilities.

In-person

In-person participation is the simplest and most familiar. To take part in the Dictation in-person, a potential participant must choose the most convenient open-type venue in their region, register there and come with an identity document on November 14, by 12:00 local time.

Everyone who participates in the event in-person will be issued a certificate of participation. It needs to be requested from the venue organizers immediately after the end of the event. Please note that the certificate must be issued immediately.

Individual results of the Dictation will begin to be published on the website dictant.rgo.ru from December 6, 2021. You can find out your result in several ways: use a 13-digit identification number or scan the QR code from the second part of the form.

In the event of worsening of epidemiological situation, a venue can transfer the Dictation from in-person format to remote mode. The organizers must notify all registered participants about the change in format and send them a link to access the event’s materials.

Remote

The remote format is an innovation of the last year. It is distinguished from the in-person one only by the presence factor: you can take the Dictation remotely from home. To do this, you will need to register at one of the event venues, as well as Internet access.

On the Dictation’s website dictant.rgo.ru, you can choose any open-type venue with a remote format and register there as a participant. It should be borne in mind that the Dictation will be taken according to the local time of the venue.

After completing the venue registration process, the organizers will send the participants a unique link for the remote participation in the Dictation based on their venue. After clicking on this link on the day of the event, you should fill out an individual questionnaire; watch a video with a welcome word from the host of the event, a virtual quiz and an explanation of the rules; answer the Dictation questions while watching a video presentation; and also get an individual 13-digit number in order to find out your results in the future.

Please note that the link to the materials will be valid only on November 14, from 12:00 to 13:00 local time of the venue. In addition, the number of participants at the event venues is strictly limited: the number of people to access the Dictation will strictly match the number declared by the venue during registration. The number of admitted participants at each venue will be counted from the moment the Dictation participant's questionnaire is completed. After the last (according to the number of applicants) participant fills out the questionnaire, access to the testing via a personal link will be blocked.

The results will begin to be published on December 6, 2021. You can find out your result only with the 13-digit code on the website dictant.rgo.ru. The code will be displayed immediately before the start, as well as during testing, and after the completion of the Dictation. Nevertheless, it is recommended to save the 13-digit code as soon as possible: it is this number that will allow the participants to return to the tasks if they get disconnected. If this happens, you will need to enter the code in the appropriate field on the screen. Then you will again get 45 minutes to complete the Dictation, and the presentation will start from the beginning.

As in the case of the in-person format, everyone who takes the test at a remote venue of the Dictation will receive a participation certificate. The organizers of the event venue must send the document electronically to the participants within two weeks after the event.

Online Dictation

For those who are impatient to find out their result and an individual certificate is not important, there is the online Dictation. It starts on November 14, at 14:00 Moscow time and ends at 14:00 Moscow time on November 24. It will be possible to take the Dictation online anywhere and at any time. Registration is not required for this. The result will be known immediately after the participant answers the last question. Once again, we note that the certificate for taking the online the Dictation is not provided.

We remind you that the registration of the event venues will last until November 10, 2021, on the website dictant.rgo.ru. Any organization – schools, universities, libraries, museums, national parks and others – can apply to hold the Geographical Dictation on November 14, 2021. At the moment, almost seven thousand venues of the Dictation have been registered around the world.

The Geographical Dictation has been held annually since 2015. The participants anonymously answer questions about the geography of Russia. Assessing the level of geographical literacy is not the main task of the event. It is educational in nature and aims to popularize geographical knowledge, as well as to increase interest in science and national heritage. Over six years, nearly 1.8 million people have taken part in the project. In 2017, the Dictation became international for the first time: it was taken in 25 countries around the world. In 2020, the number of participating countries, including Russia, reached 110.
