On July 7, the photo exhibition «Lighthouses of Russia», prepared by the Russian Geographical Society and the Navigation and Oceanography Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, began its work in Cuba. The exhibition, which was brought to the Island of Freedom by the oceanographic research vessel «Admiral Vladimirsky», features 24 photographs. They tell about the history and geography of the lighthouse authorities of our country.

Visitors to the exhibition will see portraits of many Russian lighthouses adorning the coast of the country and serving in its most diverse regions: from Sakhalin to Kaliningrad. The photos were taken by the participants of the «Lighthouses of Russia» contest.

«Some people think that in the modern world lighthouses seem to be less needed by sailors, as if they were replaced by modern navigation systems, but this is not the case. Modern electronic devices do not always work flawlessly, and lighthouses have always been reliable navigational landmarks for navigators in the farthest corners of the world and remain so to this day,» said Oleg Gaidai, Head of the Lighthouse Service of the Russian Navy, Captain 2nd Rank, in his speech at the opening of the exhibition.

He also noted that lighthouses not only fulfilled their main tasks, but were often authentic architectural monuments and cultural heritage sites.

«And, after all, they are located in the most picturesque places of our planet, » Gaidai added.

The venue of the exhibition in Cuba was not chosen by chance. The exhibition is located in the ancient Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña in Havana. One of the most picturesque Cuban lighthouses is located here, which still successfully ensures the safety of navigation.

«When it’s a little difficult, remember that there is always a lighthouse, which is our hope, » said Maria Butina, member of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, in her video message to the guests of the exhibition.

The event is included in the program of the Russian Navy’s stay in Cuba.

At the end of the event, the participants watched a documentary film about the life of lighthouse keepers in Russia.
