The XVII Congress of the Russian Geographical Society started at the State Kremlin Palace in Moscow on October 22. Its main goal will be the election of the governing bodies of the RGS. Over the course of two days, 216 delegates, including members of the Governing Council, the Academic Council, the Council of Elders, the Council of Regions, as well as representatives of the regional branches of the Society, will summarize the work for five years, discuss the vectors of further development until 2030 and priority areas of activity until 2035. Scientists, educators, public figures, and activists who have made a special contribution to the development of the RGS and geographical science will also be awarded state awards and awards of the Russian Geographical Society.
On October 22, the chairmen of six commissions of the RGS will present their reports: the Tourism Development Commission, the Permanent Environmental Protection Commission, the Geographical and Environmental Education Commission, the Territorial Organization and Planning Commission, the Youth Movement Development Commission, and the Ethnographic Commission. Reports on the activities of the Governing Council and the Academic Council of the RGS will be presented to the delegates on October 23. Also on this day, the current President of the RGS, Sergei Shoigu, will make a report on the work done, successes and achievements of the Russian Geographical Society in the period from 2020.
After summing up the results, elections of governing bodies will be held, and the President of the RGS will be elected. Also on October 23, the names of scientists who have been awarded the honorary title of «Honored Geographer of the Russian Federation» for their outstanding contribution to geographical science will be announced.
