The Russian Geographical Society together with the Federal Communications Agency issued an art stamped envelope to mark the 225th anniversary of the birth of Peter Keppen, a founding members of the Russian Geographical Society.

In 1816, Pyotr Ivanovich Keppen (1793-1864), a Russian statistician, ethnographer, bibliographer, and academician of the Russian and Petersburg Academies of Sciences, became a founder of the Society of Lovers of Russian Literature. In 1825-1826 he published one of the first bibliographic magazines in Russia, "Bibliographic sheets". In 1829-1834 he lived in Crimea, studied local nature and population and published the following works: “On winemaking and wine trade in Russia", "Antiquities of the Crimean southern coast and the Tauride mountains," which included a detailed map of the Southern Crimea. In 1834, Keppen was editor of the German issues of the "St. Petersburg Vedomosti." The researcher was a founder of the Russian Geographical Society where he headed the statistics department. He developed a systematic statistical approach to data on the ethnic composition of the Russian population and in 1851 published the first "Ethnographic Map of European Russia" The scientist contributed to the start of publication of "Lists of populated centers of the Russian Empire” , developed a “Chronology of materials for the history of foreigners of European Russia" and supported the publication of first volumes of the "Geographical and Statistical Dictionary of the Russian Empire."
Envelopes are sold at the Russian Post offices as well as in the “Collector” shop of the joint-stock company Marka (located in Moscow on Prospect Mira, 118). 1 million copies of envelopes were issued.
It should be reminded that philatelic items with geographical themes, such as postal cards, envelopes and stamps are issued in the framework of the agreement on cooperation between the Russian Geographical Society and the Federal Communications Agency.
