Moscow Library of the RGS
The Moscow Library was founded in January 2013, simultaneously with the opening of the Society's Headquarters building in Moscow.
The basis of the collection was made up of personal collections donated to the Russian Geographical Society by members of the Trustees, Media and other councils and commissions of the Society. Among the donors are Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Geographical Society V.V. Putin, President of the Russian Geographical Society S.K. Shoigu, Honorary President of the Russian Geographical Society V.M. Kotlyakov, First Vice-President of the Russian Geographical Society A.N. Chilingarov, A.R. Bokarev, Yu. L. Vorobyov, A. V. Pimanov, G. N. Timchenko, A. B. Usmanov.
Books were also donated to the library by prominent government and public figures, including Chairman of the Federation Council V.I. Matvienko and Minister of Foreign Affairs S.V. Lavrov, delegations of geographical societies of foreign countries. A significant contribution to the formation of the library collection was made by the Russian State Library, which donated more than 10,000 books to the Society, including rare ancient publications. Among the publications transferred to the library, there are literary monuments of the 18th – early 19th centuries, some of which are presented in the Full-text electronic library of the Russian Geographical Society .
Regional branches and partners of the Society - the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences - also contribute to the replenishment of library collections. Of particular note is the transfer to the library of books from the personal collections of the Vice-President of the Russian Geographical Society (1955-1964), Honorary Member (1975) I.P. Gerasimov, a member of the Society with more than half a century of experience B.D. Sergievsky and archaeologist S.I. Weinstein.
