Astrakhan Branch

The Astrakhan regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society was established in 1964, but with the collapse of the Union, its activities practically ceased. The revival took place in August 1995 on the eve of the 150th anniversary of the Society.

Its main tasks are to support public initiatives in the study of geographical patterns, conduct scientific research and form an ecological culture. Astrakhan geographers participated in the Cousteau team's expedition to the Caspian Sea. Their authority in the field of environmental safety is so great that geographers are constantly invited as experts by exploration and production companies operating in the Astrakhan region, Kalmykia and the waters of the northern Caspian Sea. The Department includes sections of speleology and karst studies, cryptozoology, botany, history and archaeology, hydrology and oceanology, children's and youth tourism.
