Department in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug

The branch of the Russian Geographical Society in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug was established in 2012 on the basis of the district museum and is one of the youngest branches of the Society.

The main task facing Nenets geographers is the popularization of geographical discoveries of the past and present and the dissemination of geographical science.

In the near future, the Department plans to conduct archival research and expeditions to the area of Matveev Island in the Barents Sea. In this place, in August 1942, the tugboat Komsomolets sank with an unarmed barge. There were several hundred people on the latter, including women and children.
