Department in the Republic of Kalmykia

The branch of the Russian Geographical Society in the Republic of Kalmykia was established in 2011.

The most important tasks set by the Department are the dissemination of information about the nature of Kalmykia, as well as the formation of a responsible attitude to the environment and the popularization of eco–movement among young people. One of the primary goals of the Department is to tell the history of the republic, the difficult fate and rich culture of the Kalmyk and other peoples who have been living together on the territory of Kalmykia for more than 400 years.

The staff focuses on the main geographical problems of the region – drought, rapid desertification and the disappearance of the symbol of the Kalmyk steppes – saiga.
