Moscow City Branch

The Moscow City Branch of the Russian Geographical Society was established in March 1946. This largest branch of the Society has been bringing together geographers, researchers, teachers and nature lovers for more than 70 years to discuss and solve topical environmental problems, the interaction of society and nature.

There are 24 commissions, which hear more than 200 different reports a year, from popular scientific reports of travelers to different parts of the world to high-level scientific reports on theoretical problems of geography, meetings and conferences, expeditions are organized.

Throughout its history, the main goal of the Department has been the development of geographical science and the popularization of geographical knowledge. An important distinguishing feature has always been following the traditions laid down by the luminaries of Russian geographical science. The chairmen of the Moscow branch were twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Rear Admiral Ivan Dmitrievich Papanin, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Director of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honorary President of the Society, Academician Vladimir Mikhailovich Kotlyakov.
